Bisons rained out in Pawtucket; Venditte dealt to Seattle

The Buffalo Bisons had an eventful day in Rhode Island on Saturday – even though they never did get to throw a pitch.

The Herd’s contest against the Pawtucket Red Sox was delayed by a brief but substantial rainstorm that drenched the field at McCoy Stadium. The start of the game was held up for more than two hours, and was finally postponed around 8:30 p.m.

The teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday. The first pitch of the opener is 11:30 a.m. (Radio 1520 AM).

Heading West: Pat Venditte will not be in the Buffalo bullpen when the teams resume the series on Sunday. The “switch-pitcher,” who has received some attention for his ability to pitch with either arm, was traded by the Toronto Blue Jays to the Seattle Mariners. In return, the Blue Jays received a player to be named.

Venditte had a 2-1 record with a 4.37 ERA with the Bisons in 35 innings of work this season. In addition, he averaged 13.4 strikeouts per nine innings. With Toronto, Venditte only pitched 8.2 innings, compiling an ERA of 5.19.

The Mariners are stocking up on Blue Jays pitchers. The teams recently completed a deal in which pitcher Drew Storen was sent to Seattle while Joaquin Benoit came to Toronto.

Welcome: Mike Bolsinger was activated by the Bisons. He should start one of Sunday’s games. Bolsinger came over from the Dodgers in a trade on Monday. He was 1-4 with a 6.83 ERA with the Dodgers in 2016. Scott Diamond (7-1, 3.67) is expected to be the other Herd starter on Sunday.

Also arriving: Pitcher Jason Berken was called up from New Hampshire by the Bisons. Infielder David Adams was placed on the disabled list. The 32-year-old Berken is trying to battle his way back to the majors. He had a 2-7 record with a 4.41 ERA.

Adams has hit .250 with two homers and 20 RBIs in 66 games with the Bisons this season.

No more mystery: The names of people who have signed baseballs for the Bisons’ popular “Mystery Ball” promotion have been released, and as usual it’s an interesting collection of personalities.

Baseball standouts include Jose Bautista, Josh Donaldson, Roberto Alomar, Tom Seaver, Joe Torre and Darryl Strawberry. Other celebrities to sign were Arnold Palmer, Nick Saban, John Travolta, Brad Paisley, Jack Eichel, Wendel Clark and Andre Reed.

The game will be played on Tuesday, Aug. 16, against the Rochester Red Wings. Starting time is 7:05 p.m.
