Man’s body pulled from Niagara River

The body of a man was recovered shortly before 11 p.m. near the north Grand Island bridges, Grand Island fire officials and U.S. Coast Guard officials.

Authorities said the man had been swimming off a pontoon boat near Buckhorn Island State Park on Grand Island and that he jumped into the water and didn’t surface.

The search started around 9 p.m..

State Park Police officials declined comment but Niagara County Sheriff and Erie County Sheriff officials confirmed they were assisting in the search for the man. Marine units of both the Niagara and Erie County sheriff departments, as well as the Grand Island Fire Company, too. The Coast Guard also assisted.

The name of the victim was not released.
