Ruth Urban, wife of former News publisher was active in Buffalo social circles

Ruth “Dolly” Urban, wife of former Buffalo News president and publisher Henry Z. Urban, died Tuesday in Beechwood Homes, Getzville. She was 96.

Born in Buffalo, the former Ruth deMoss Wickwire was the daughter of industrialist Ward Wickwire. She attended the Franklin Elementary School and was a 1938 graduate of the Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Conn.

Mrs. Urban served as president of the Junior Board of Children’s Hospital, the Republican Women’s Club and the Garret Club. She was a member of the board of directors of Buffalo State College and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and was active in many civic groups.

First studying in Europe as a young woman, she traveled extensively across the United States and around the world, She maintained numerous collections, acted in musicals at the Garret Club, enjoyed swimming and was an avid bridge player.

Her husband of 66 years, who was publisher of The News from 1974 to 1983, died in 2014.

Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Smith and Florence Hunn; two sons, Henry Z. Jr. and Ward; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in the fall.
