Canadian police confirm body found in Lake Erie is that of missing fisherman

The body found floating in Lake Erie Thursday morning was that of Giusseppe “Joe” Reinhardt, 37, of Niagara Falls, Ont., the Ontario Provincial Police announced Friday afternoon.

“No foul play is suspected and the death is not being treated as suspicious,” a statement from police said.

Reinhart is believed to have embarked alone from Crystal Beach, Ont., on a fishing trip around 3 a.m. on July 26. His unoccupied boat was found about 10 hours later off the shore of Hamburg.

U.S. and Canadian officials scoured the lake and shoreline for two days using boats and aircraft before calling off the search.

The body was found by another boater Thursday off the shore of Port Maitland, Ont., about 18 miles west of Port Colborne, Ont. An autopsy was conducted Friday morning to confirm the body’s identity.
