Free inspection, cleaning and tune-up of furnaces, boilers and chimneys is available until Nov. 4 through the Erie County Department of Social Services Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), officials announced. A free carbon monoxide detector and programmable thermostat will be installed in eligible households that do not already have them.
To be eligible, households must have received a regular HEAP benefit last winter or be responsible for a heating bill and have income which falls within HEAP guidelines. Renters are not eligible, because maintenance of heating equipment is the landlord’s responsibility. Primary heating equipment must be more than 12 months old and must not have been cleaned within the past 12 months.
Applications can be made at the HEAP office, 291 Pearl St., from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends. Applications also can be requested by calling 858-1969. Other information about the program is available on the HEAP hotline at 858-7644.
