McKeever Post beats Whitestown to stay in NYS American Legion Baseball Tournament

McKeever Post of South Buffalo kept its championship hopes alive in the New York State American Legion Baseball Tournament with an 8-5 victory Wednesday night over Whitestown.

McKeever (1-1) will face Amsterdam (1-1) in their final game of pool play at 9 a.m. Thursday morning. The winner will finish second to Rockland County in the Air Force Pool and advance to a semifinal game on Friday against the Navy Pool first-place team. Amsterdam lost to Rockland County, 11-0, on Wednesday. Rockland had defeated McKeever Post, 11-8, on Tuesday.

Nate Mascellino (Canisius) pitched eight innings for the victory before Michael Gabriele (Canisius High) took over in the ninth to record the save. Mascellino also had three hits giving him six in the tournament. Zack Mitchell (Canisius High), Bam Ruggiero and Gabriele had two hits each for the winners.

The South Buffalo team will have to carry on Thursday without manager Ron Leib. Leib left after Wednesday’s game to drive to Altoona, Pa., to direct his Leibs team in the Altoona Regional of the AAABA Tournament. Leibs will compete against Boston, last year’s national runner-up, Maryland and host Altoona in the regional. The AAABA Nationals will be next week in Johnstown, Pa.
