Florence E. MacKearnin, 102, Girl Scout leader

April 3, 1914 – June 29, 2016

Florence E. MacKearnin, a longtime South Buffalo resident, died June 29 in Wesley Health Care Center, Saratoga Springs. She was 102.

Born in Buffalo, the former Florence E. Wieder was a graduate of South Park High School and a lifelong member of Salem Lutheran Church.

Mrs. MacKearnin worked as an actuary for New York Life Insurance Co. from 1970 to 1975, then was a bookkeeper for Englebert’s Jewelry Store in West Seneca. She retired in 1985.

She was a Girl Scout leader and active in the YWCA. An accomplished seamstress, she made wedding dresses for four of her granddaughters. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and playing bridge.

Her husband of 43 years, Ross, died in 1976.

Survivors include three daughters, Patricia E. Fitch, Barbara J. Thiebeau and Alice C. Burr; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 20 in Lakeside Cemetery, 4810 Camp Road, Hamburg.
