Coast Guard identifies Canadian boater missing off Hamburg shore

A search for a missing boater off Hamburg’s Wanakah Beach was launched Tuesday afternoon and was expected to continue all night.

Late Tuesday night the missing man was identified as Giusseppe Reinhart, 37, of Niagara Falls, Ont.

The U.S. Coast Guard used both boats and helicopters in the search, which began after the boat floated ashore at about 1 p.m. Canadian military assets were expected to join in the search if it continues into Wednesday.

The beached boat had a man-overboard signal that was beating when it was spotted, according to a Coast Guard spokesman. A Coast Guard helicopter from the Detroit Command and the Erie County Sheriff’s Air One helicopter unit initially were called in for the search.

The boat was found loaded with beer, fishing poles and fish that had been recently caught.

The Coast Guard asks that anyone with information about Reinhart call the Buffalo sector at 843-9527.
