Robert A. Stiller, retired federal special agent

Robert A. Stiller, a retired federal special agent, died Friday in his Hamburg home after a short illness. He was 74.

Born in Buffalo, he grew up in Lake View and was a graduate of St. Francis High School. He attended Canisius College and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1970 from Tri-State College in Angola, Ind.

After college, Mr. Stiller began a 26-year career as a federal special agent with the Treasury Department assigned to various locations, including Southern California, Washington, D.C., and Helena, Mont. After retiring in the mid 1990s, he returned to the Buffalo area and worked for the Department of Homeland Security.

An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, boating and hiking. He earned his private pilot’s license and loved to fly.

He was active as a volunteer for Cub Scout Pack 591 in Lake View and as a coach in youth sports. He also was a member of Hamburg Lodge 992, Loyal Order of the Moose.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, the former Patricia Yauch; a son, Lawrence; two daughters, Susan Sondeno and Karen; three sisters, Judith Kemmer, Jane Shepherd and Kathleen; two brothers, Lawrence and Richard; and five grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday in St. John Paul II Catholic Church, 2052 Lakeview Road, Lake View.
