The American Red Cross is facing a critical blood shortage, the organization announced Monday.
Despite receiving thousands of blood donations after an emergency request was made in early July, the Red Cross is still in need of donations of blood and platelets. The organization is urging eligible donors to give blood to ensure there is enough blood to meet patient needs throughout the summer.
The Red Cross currently has less than a five-day supply of blood on hand. A five-day supply is needed in order to meet patient needs and handle any emergencies that may require large amounts of donated blood, the organization said.
“The Red Cross continues to have an emergency need for blood and platelet donors to give now and help save patient lives,” said Patty Corvaia, of the New York-Penn Blood Services Region. “We are grateful for those who have already stepped up this summer to give and want to remind those who are eligible that hospital patients are still counting on them to roll up a sleeve.”
Donors of all types are needed and those who donate by Aug. 31 will receive a $5 Amazon gift card claim code.
