Comments on the proposed bike trail on West River Parkway in Grand Island are now being accepted, the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced.
More than 200 people attended an informational session on the bike trail last week. The preliminary plan calls for the closing and resurfacing of West River Parkway, along with several cosmetic changes. Six parking lots are also planned for the path. Traffic would be diverted to West River Road.
The trail would connect Buffalo and Niagara Falls, as well as Beaver Island State Park and Buckhorn State Park.
Opponents of the plan expressed concerns over increased traffic on West River Road and over the placement of the parking lots. While the duck blinds in place will be retained under the plan, hunters also have expressed worries over access to the blinds.
Residents in favor of the trail view it as an extension of Buffalo’s waterfront, and a needed piece of the Niagara River Greenway.
