Letter: It is ridiculous to limit laws to what the Founders knew

It is ridiculous to limit laws to what the Founders knew

A recent letter to the editor proposed limiting the application of the Second Amendment to only flintlock muskets because that’s what the Founding Fathers “knew at the time,” and that “they could not have possibly foreseen the effect of technology 200 years in the future.”

By that logic, since the Founding Fathers could have never, when writing the First Amendment, imagined Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Skype, blogs, smartphones, television, radio or even the telegraph, we should limit free speech to what they knew at the time.

United States citizens should be able to speak freely through all the books, newspapers, pamphlets and town criers they want!
