Yacht club employee admits trying to sink boat in Black Rock Canal

A Hamburg man who was the dock master at the Buffalo Yacht Club faces up to a year in jail for purposefully sinking a boat in the Black Rock Canal, according to U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr.

Paul E. Van Voorhees, 55, admitted to obstruction of waterways and is scheduled for sentencing on Oct. 19.

Van Voorhees, who was in charge of maintaining the yacht club, was with another club employee last Nov. 5 when they allegedly towed a 13-foot metal row boat that was damaged and floating near the club into the canal in order to sink it, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron J. Mango.

A witness saw Van Voorhees release the boat into the canal and called the U.S. Coast Guard, which later recovered the boat.

The following month, Van Voorhees admitted to federal authorities he tried to sink the boat on purpose.
