Thief threatens store employee with knife after West Side robbery

A man pushing a child in a stroller was accused of stealing about $225 of laundry-detergent pods from a Family Dollar store on the West Side Tuesday evening and then threatening a store employee with a knife outside the business, Northwest District police said.

The incident began at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, when the thief stole at least 40 packages of the pods from the Family Dollar store on West Ferry Street near Grant Street. As a store employee confronted the man outside the store, police said the man pulled a knife from his waistband and threatened the employee.

Police are checking to see whether store officials have video surveillance images of the thief, who fled on Arkansas Street and then south on Herkimer Street.
