Bona forward Woods says he will transfer

St. Bonaventure’s men’s basketball team is losing one of its key big men to transfer.

Sophomore forward Derrick Woods is leaving the team, he announced Tuesday via his Twitter account. The 6-foot-9 Woods averaged 13.1 minutes and 3.5 points a game for the Bonnies last season. He was not necessarily slotted to start this season but figured to be a fixture in the front-line rotation.

Like the transfer decision of the University at Buffalo’s Lamonte Bearden last week, the timing of the move is unusual because it comes late in the college basketball offseason. Woods, a Trenton, N.J., native, is the second big man to transfer this offseason, joining 6-10 Jordan Tyson, who decided to leave Bona after averaging 15.8 minutes and 2.3 points as a freshman.

Bona fortified its front court in April by adding 6-9 senior Chinoso Obokoh, a transfer from Syracuse. He steps in as the starting center. Bona’s front-line also returns 6-7 senior Denzel Gregg, the Atlantic 10 Conference’s sixth man of the year last season. The Bonnies also add 6-7 wingman David Andoh, who sat out last year after transferring from Liberty. He’s expected to be a big contributor.

But Woods’ departure thins the front line and creates a hole for future years. Bona recruited one freshman center, 6-10 Amadi Ikpeze of Amherst High School. He will get a chance to grab playing time as a freshman.
