Driver dies in a Lewiston one-car crash, fire

LEWISTON – A one-car crash resulted in a fire and the death of the male driver early Sunday morning, Niagara County sheriff’s deputies reported.

An emergency call alerted the department that a vehicle had gone off the road just before 2 a.m. at Ridge and Ransomville roads and that the engine compartment was on fire.

When patrol and volunteers from the Ransomville Fire Department arrived, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames.

The man, who was alone in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation revealed the driver was southbound on Ransomville Road when he failed to stop at a stop sign at Ridge Road and the car left the roadway. No other details were provided.

The Niagara County Accident Investigation Unit continues to investigate. The man’s name is being withheld pending identification of family.
