Two kayakers were assisted by the U.S. Coast Guard Sunday afternoon after their craft capsized from the wake of a passing boat in Lake Erie, authorities said.
The Coast Guard received a call about 4:30 p.m. from a Good Samaritan who said the kayakers were in the water near the Buffalo Lighthouse yelling for help, said Petty Office Kyle Bruce. The lighthouse is adjacent to the Coast Guard station at the mouth of the Buffalo River.
“Our small boat was on scene within a minute or two of the call,” Bruce said.
One of the kayakers was able to swim to shore while rescuers plucked the other kayaker from the water, Bruce said. The Coast Guard dewatered the kayak and helped the men back in, he said.
No injuries were reported.
