A state agency and a clothing store, both on Broadway, were damaged by someone who used a sledgehammer to smash through the exterior walls, Ferry-Fillmore District police said Saturday.
At Trendz Clothing Store, 1048 Broadway, police detained a 15-year-old boy who was seen walking away from the rear corner of the store at about 11:30 p.m. Friday. They found a 2-by-2-foot hole in the rear cinder-block wall with a sledgehammer left leaning against the wall. However, the would-be intruder failed to get through an inner layer of bricks to enter the store.
However, a sledgehammer attack on the walls of the Miller-Broadway Recovery and Treatment Center, 1384 Broadway, was successful. A state Office of Mental Health employee told police Saturday morning that someone smashed through the rear wall and entered the building, a branch of the Buffalo Psychiatric Center. An inventory will be taken to determine what was stolen.
