Como Park area could once again draw families, visitors
As a lifelong resident of the Depew-Lancaster communities, I could not let the opportunity pass without expressing my love of the Como Park area and the fond memories all of us who remember its heyday have for the lake.
Early on it was used by canoes and rowboats; in the winter months when frozen we all skated on its surface all the way around the island. There was a boathouse that burned down in the ’70s that was used in the winter to warm up, sharpen skates and serve hot chocolate.
Given some foresight this park and lake could once again become a destination. I could see an entrepreneur rebuilding the island boathouse and renting kayaks and rowboats once again. The county and state have in the past squandered opportunities like this in the name of urban renewal.
This lake should be restored to its former glory. It and the work in the business district would again be the inspiration for others to come to Lancaster and experience bygone times. We have a great heritage and a fantastic resource. Let’s not lose it to a wrecking ball.
