WECHTER, Donald Willard

WECHTER - Donald Willard December 20, 1930 - June 29, 2016 Age 85, passed away June 29th, 2016 at MaGee-Womens Hospital of UPMC in Pittsburgh, PA. Born in Detroit, Michigan December 20, 1930, Don moved to East Aurora, New York with his parents as a child where he lived most of his life, eventually residing and raising a family on Glenridge Road for nearly 40 years in the home his mother and father built. After graduating East Aurora High School, Don attended Cornell University studying engineering. At Cornell, he was a brother of Sigma Nu, a member of the Cornell track team for which he held the javelin record for several years, and a member of the University's music chorus program including the Cayuga's Waiters. He was in ROTC and served 2 years active duty during the Korean conflict. Professionally, Don established Wechter Process Equipment, Inc., acting as a manufacturer's representative for local and national companies and maintained his office for years within the village of East Aurora. He was active in the community as a long-time member of the Rotary Club, a big supporter of the Reunion Weekend activities, and involved with local conservation programs. Don had many local and community interests. For many years he was involved with fast-pitch softball teams, bowling leagues, and was a member of the Buffalo Ski Club. He enjoyed performing as part of the Aurora Players and as a baritone in barbershop quartets and choruses. He could frequently be found at Charlie's Diner for breakfast and enjoying a bit of bird watching from his back patio on Glenridge Road. In 2007, Don moved from East Aurora to the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's South Hills and had since been a popular resident at the Asbury Heights community in Mount Lebanon. Don will be remembered as an East Auroran at heart, a dedicated father, and a likable friend with an easy-going personality and dry sense of humor. He is preceded in death by his parents Katherine and Willard Wechter of East Aurora, NY. He is survived by his three sons, Jeffrey (Teri) of Minneapolis, MN, Steven (Heidrun) of Geneva, Switzerland and David (Heather) of Pittsburgh, PA, six grandchildren (Adam, Nicholas, Noah, Jennifer, Daniel, Hannah) and his former wife, Ann Doran Wechter of Orchard Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation be offered to The Boys and Girls Club of East Aurora, 24 Paine St., East Aurora, NY 14052 in his memory. A Remembrance reception will be held at Wallenwein's Hotel, 641 Oakwood Ave, East Aurora, NY Monday, August 1st. Friends are welcome from 6.00 - 9.00pm.
