Clarence Brothers of Mercy merging with German counterpart

The Brothers of Mercy of Montabaur, who operate the Brothers of Mercy Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clarence, announced this week they will merge with another Brothers of Mercy Catholic congregation in Trier, Germany. A merger ceremony will be held Sept. 1 in Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, 10950 Main St.., Clarence.

“The decision to merge with the Brothers of Mercy of Mary Help of Christians was made to strengthen our common charism and ministry to the sick and elderly,” said Brother Jude Holzfoerster, regional superior.

The brothers of the Clarence community will continue to operate the 240-bed nursing home, as well as the 80-unit Brothers of Mercy Sacred Heart Adult Home, the 100-unit Brothers of Mercy Senior Apartments and the 111 all-inclusive Montabaur Heights Apartments.

The merged community will have 63 members, 11 of them in Clarence. The German congregation was founded in 1850 by Brother Peter Friedhofen. His friend, Brother Ignatius Lotschert, founded Brothers of Mercy of Montabaur six years later.
