Letter: We must take responsibility for current world conditions

We must take responsibility for current world conditions

The July 3 Another Voice, “Religion and morality are essential to our freedom,” talked about how our Founding Fathers eloquently expressed the importance of religion and morality in a democracy, which plays a key role in preserving freedom and liberty. In fact, George Washington said, “Religion and morality are the essential pillars of a civil society.”

The chief task of all people should be to build a global society where people of all persuasions can live together in peace and harmony. If the golden rule, “Do unto others what you would have them do unto you,” prevailed in society we would not be witnessing some of the sad events of this past week, months and years.

Why is it happening with such regularity? Does not all life matter? Why are laws and rules made that play up to the exception to the rule rather than protecting the basic rules of society? Evil is given a pass; certain laws seem not to apply to the wealthy or prominent political leaders. Religion and morality have been relegated to the back row. The balance needed in a free society has been corrupted and replaced by lies, greed and power lust. Lawlessness, terrorism and self-righteousness prevail in a country that prides itself on freedom, liberty and justice.

History provides us with a preview of the future if we do not learn from the past. Rwanda, Bosnia, Cambodia, the Holocaust are examples where millions of lives were lost because “life” was not respected. Those who murder for their own reasons and purposes are a threat to society. If evil is not contained it proliferates. It’s here and growing like a cancer.

May a healthy faith and morality act decisively to stop it and may our battle cry be: let there be peace on earth and let it begin with “me!”
