Lake View woman wins Buffalo Bills’ Health & Wellness Challenge

A Southtowns woman has won the Independent Health and Buffalo Bills Health & Wellness Challenge and will head to the West Coast this fall for a Bills away game as a result.

“I’m a big Bills fan but have never attended a road game,” said Michele Hoff, of Lake View, in a news release.

She and her husband will travel gratis with the Bills for the Oct. 9 game against the new Los Angeles Cardinals.

Hoff was among more than 13,000 Western New Yorkers who took part in the latest challenge, and 3,360 of the 13,000 participated for the first time in the community-wide health and wellness initiative, which ran April 18-May 29.

Hoff joined the Health and Wellness Challenge while looking for new ways to stay healthy.

“I really like the fact that the different challenges were simple, everyday things anyone can do,” she said. “I was already walking 60 minutes each morning, so I really concentrated on finding new ways to eat right. I’m a creature of habit and like to eat the same things. Thanks to the challenge, I found some new healthy recipes and found some different ways to prepare vegetables and fruits for my family.”

Challenge participants earned points by meeting three main daily goals: getting at least 20 minutes of physical activity, eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables and drinking at least eight glasses of water.

Overall, participants logged 14,560 hours of physical activity and consumed 207,290 servings of fruits and vegetables and 345,112 glasses of water.

Independent Health and the Bills launched the challenge in October 2014 and have sponsored it three more times since then. Prizes, including autographed Bills memorabilia and gift cards for wearable activity trackers, workout apparel and sporting goods have been awarded weekly during the six-week contests.

A fifth challenge is planned for football season. Until then, participants are encouraged to continue to visit buffalobills.com/thechallenge for new wellness tips and message board updates that will help them stay motivated. All New York State residents are welcome to participate, regardless of their insurance carrier.
