"Spectacular crash" in front of Town of Tonawanda police department caught on video

An elderly driver pulling out of a parking spot at Sheridan Plaza hit the accelerator instead of the brake causing a wild accident right in front of the Town of Tonawanda Police Department.

A police surveillance camera captured what they described as the "spectacular crash."

The incident took place at about 1 p.m.

An outdoor surveillance camera on the west end of the Police building documented the event, police said.

A statement from police indicated that the driver apparently became confused and stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake.

"The vehicle careened  in a southerly direction directly across Sheridan Drive and went completely airborne as it struck the center median," police said. "The vehicle eventually came to rest in the Goodyear Tire parking lot."

The car hit several parked cars but luckily no one was hurt.

The driver, whose name was not released, was issued three traffic tickets and a DMV Driver’s review was requested.
