Meet Sabres prospect Connor Hurley

Current Team: Notre Dame

Position: Center

Age: 20

Height: 6-foot-2

Weight: 190 lbs.

Stats: Six goals, 18 points in 36 NCAA games

Drafted: 2nd round (38th overall) in the 2013 draft by Buffalo

Sabres Connection: Hurley plays at Notre Dame with fellow Sabres prospect Cal Petersen. Being teammates with a player drafted by the same NHL team is a luxury few players enjoy, and it's helped the two get close over the past few years. It gives each of them someone to talk to about the Sabres on campus and when Development Camp rolls around, they usually are roommates. It also makes for some friendly competition this week.

"Scoring on him in practice is one of the best things ever," Hurley said. "You get to rattle him a little bit. It's been great."

Hurley hasn't produced at the level he'd hoped coming into college, scoring four goals his freshman year and six as a sophomore. He's placed high expectations on himself for next year based on the work he's putting in this summer.

How would you describe your game?

"I'm a playmaking forward. Face-offs is a big part of my game. I like to work hard in the corner and get in front of the net. I just like to make plays going into the offensive zone and make players around me better."

What player do you model your game after?

"David Krejci. He's a great player. He's a little smaller than me, but he creates a lot of plays in the offensive zone. I like how hard he works during games."

What is your greatest hockey accomplishment?

"My greatest hockey accomplishment would probably be winning the state high school tournament in Minnesota with Edina. It's such a fun experience. I grew up watching that tournament. My older brother Ryan won it. That's all I wanted to do since I was a little kid."

What are your goals for this season?

"I have a lot of expectations for myself. Obviously the last couple of years haven't been what I've expected from myself. Going into this season, I'm trying to work with Buffalo to get my game as high as it can be. I came in before the camp for like five days working out with the team, just trying to do the best I can and have them help me any way they can. I'm trying to score at least 15 goals this year and get at least 25 assists."

Why do you wear No. 16?

"I wear No. 16 because Jay Barriball, who played on Minnesota and in the AHL for a bit. He played with my brother Ryan at Holy Angels. He was such a great player and I modeled my game sort of after him."

What’s something you like to do off the ice?

"I like golfing a lot. I like hanging out with my teammates, going to movies. I like watching shows a lot."
