Sabres connection: Brickley played with Sabres defenseman Casey Nelson at Minnesota State, where the two were defensive partners a majority of the season. Nelson talked to Brickley a bit about the Sabres before he came to development camp.
"He talked about the staff and how well he's treated, how great the organization is," Brickley said. "He talks great about Buffalo."
How would you describe your game?
"I'm definitely an offensive defenseman. I like to carry the puck a bit, make plays for the most part."
What player do you model your game after?
"I like Drew Doughty. Growing up, my dad was always telling me, 'Hey, why don't you be a Bobby Orr or something?' That's pretty tough to fill."
What is your greatest hockey accomplishment?
"Definitely going to play college hockey. Growing up, that was always my dream. Now, getting the opportunity to get looked at by NHL teams, that's just a plus to me."
What are your goals for this season?
"I'd like to win, obviously. I want to win the championship. That's an ultimate goal. Make the tournament. We were shy just this past year, losing to Ferris St. It was a tough pill to swallow, but that was my first year and that's always a great experience. It was definitely a learning experience, so I want to be able to make the big tournament, be a silent leader, show what I've got and proceed to get better."
Why do you wear No. 8?
"My father. He's a big inspiration to me. He taught me how to play hockey, skate, stickhandle, shoot and all that good stuff. He's a role model. I look up to him."
What’s something you like to do off the ice?
"I love to golf. A lot of the guys during the summer will work out, skate a little bit, then almost every day or so go to the golf course and hit nine holes or something."
