Joan M. Arcara, a registered nurse, died Thursday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital following a long illness. She was 78.
The former Joan Smick was born in Buffalo and graduated from Mount Mercy Academy and D’Youville College.
She worked as a registered nurse for Sheridan Park, Kenmore Mercy and Sisters of Charity hospitals.
A longtime resident of the Town of Tonawanda, she was very active in St. Amelia’s parish, where she sang with the St. Amelia folk group for 35 years. She was a member of Catholic Charismatic prayer group and the Mission Renewal Group, served as a cafeteria assistant at St. Amelia School. She also served as den mother for the Cub Scouts.
She enjoyed ceramics, cooking, baking crafting and gardening in her spare time.
For the past eight years she had lived at Beechwood Continuing Care in Amherst.
She is survived by four sons, Michael, John, Christopher and Daniel; three daughters, Karen Grey, Lisa Wiedemann and Joanne Constantino; 11 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9 a.m. Wednesday in St. Amelia Roman Catholic Church, 210 St. Amelia Drive, Town of Tonawanda.
