Falls man pleads innocent in stabbing incident

LOCKPORT – A Niagara Falls man pleaded not guilty Friday in Niagara County Court to an indictment accusing him of stabbing another man five or six times April 29 in a home in the 1500 block of LaSalle Avenue in the Falls.

Lawrence J. Smith, 28, who listed an address in a Niagara Falls Boulevard motel, was charged with first-degree assault. The victim was a friend of Smith’s, Deputy District Attorney Doreen M. Hoffmann said. Witnesses told police that the attack seemed unprovoked. The victim was stabbed repeatedly in the torso, police reported at the time, and he underwent surgery in Erie County Medical Center to repair a punctured lung.

Smith, who was arrested May 3 at the county welfare office on 10th Street in the Falls, is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail. He has a prior conviction for a pair of 2006 stabbings, and he served five years in state prison, including parole violation time.
