Carol J. Steinhart, freelance writer, skiier

June 13, 1926 – May 23, 2016

Carol J. “Sis” Steinhart, a local freelance writer and mother of six, died May 23 in Fort Worth, Texas, at age 89.

Born and raised in Buffalo as Carol Shackman, Steinhart graduated from Bennett High School and attended Northwestern University. She lived in Clarence before leaving the area in late 2012.

Steinhart wrote freelance articles for The Buffalo News, Ski Magazine and other periodicals. She was a downhill and cross-country skier, and also enjoyed golf, tennis and swimming.

Her husband, Dr. Jacob M. Steinhart, founder of Amherst Pediatric Associates, died in 2014.

She is survived by a daughter, Carrie S. Flynn; five sons, Corklin R. “Corky,” Craig J., Curt M., Conrad K. “Cubby,” and Justin C. “Casey”; and a sister, Harlene “Buty” Meyers.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Temple Beth Zion, 805 Delaware Ave.
