Man who died in North Tonawanda rollover advised not to drive shortly before crash

NORTH TONAWANDA – A 38-year-old man died following a one-car, rollover crash Tuesday night on Ruie Road, North Tonawanda police said.

Samuel P. Newson, of North Tonawanda, lost control of his car shortly before midnight on Ruie Road near North Avenue. The car skidded sideways from the westbound lane, across Ruie, then went over two lawns before striking and uprooting a pine tree, Police Det. Capt. Thomas E. Krantz said.

About 30 to 40 minutes before the crash, police encountered Newson at a home on Wurlitzer Drive where he was involved in an argument with another person.

Newson was drunk at the time and was advised to leave the scene. He locked up his car and started walking away from the area, Krantz said.

A short time later, neighbors called police to report Newson had returned and was seen getting into his car. By the time police arrived, he had driven away.

As police were attempting to locate Newson’s vehicle, the report came in about the crash on Ruie.

Police believe Newson’s Chevrolet Cruze was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash, Krantz said.
