NORTH TONAWANDA – The Niagara County Independence Party announced Wednesday it is endorsing North Tonawanda City Attorney Katherine D. Alexander for election this fall. Alexander, a Republican, was appointed to the post late in 2015, after Shawn P. Nickerson was appointed a part-time city judge and had to resign as city attorney.
Independence Party Chairwoman Susan Agnello Eberwein said she likes Alexander’s promise to make her office more accessible to the city’s taxpayers, as well as her success at negotiating maintenance agreements with banks holding homes in foreclosure that headed off neighborhoods’ concerns about blight. That, said Eberwein, is “the kind of community-oriented leadership and issues management the Independence Party looks for in elected government leaders. She has a solid track record.”
Before becoming city attorney, Alexander worked simultaneously as assistant city attorney and assistant county attorney. She also worked on the staff of former State Sen. George D. Maziarz.
