Route 20 bridge to be named for Westfield soldier who died in Afghanistan

WESTFIELD – A Route 20 bridge is being named in honor of a Westfield native who was killed in Afghanistan in 2011.

The span between Oak and South Portage streets will be named the Sgt. Kevin W. White Memorial Bridge. White, a Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipient, died when his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device.

A 2006 graduate of Westfield Academy, White enlisted in the Army after his graduation. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant posthumously. The renaming legislation, which was sponsored by Sen. Catharine Young, R-Olean, was approved by the State Senate on Tuesday.
