Police identify pedestrian who was struck, seriously injured on Transit Road in Amherst

A Buffalo woman was struck and injured by a vehicle Tuesday night on Transit Road in the Town of Amherst, police said.

The victim, identified as Tymika M. Barnes, 26, was taken by Mercy Flight to a Erie County Medical Center after the accident at about 9:58 p.m. just south of Sheridan Drive near the Eastern Hills Mall, police said.

Barnes was in surgery shortly after midnight, and her condition was not known Wednesday morning.

Police said Barnes was talking to her husband on her cellphone when she stepped off a median and into the side of a southbound vehicle driven by Syed Y. Bukhari, 20, of Amherst. The vehicle, which was in the left lane, was described as a 2016 Chrysler.

No charges had been filed as of early Thursday. Police are continuing to investigate.

Transit Road was initially closed to traffic in both directions during the investigation of the accident; the northbound lanes were reopened to traffic just after 10:30 p.m.

Volunteers from Harris Hill Fire Co. assisted at the scene.
