Buffalo Zoo’s lion cub gets a name

He’s cute, he’s furry – and now he’s got a name.

The nearly 3-month-old lion cub – the Buffalo Zoo’s first in 25 years – has been named Tobias, a name that stuck after the keeper staff began using it.

“While it is not uncommon to have a public and completely different behind-the-scenes name, we are hopeful that the public will embrace this name, particularly when considering his cute nickname, ‘Toby,’” said Alicia DuBrava, the lead big cats keeper.

Tobias weighs nearly 20 pounds now. Efforts are underway to acquaint the little guy with the rest of the lion pride, and to start his introduction to the outdoor yard in advance of his eventual public debut.
