Wheatfield man killed as car leaves road, hits trees in Newfane

NEWFANE – A 29-year-old Wheatfield man died Thursday night in a one-car crash on Phillips Road in Newfane, according to the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office.

Justin Mauk was driving east on Phillips, just east of Fuller Road, shortly before 10:30 p.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve, his car left the roadway and struck several trees, the sheriff’s office found in its preliminary investigation. The car was found in the woods in front of 6468 Phillips.

Mauk was pronounced dead at the scene, while a male passenger was treated at the scene by volunteers from Miller Hose Fire Company and then taken by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center with what are described as non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities did not identify the passenger.
