Canoeist treated for hypothermia after vessel capsizes in Cattaraugus Creek

IRVING – A Silver Creek man was treated for hypothermia after his canoe capsized late Thursday afternoon in Cattaraugus Creek, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said.

Joshua Pfeiffer of Springville was fishing on an island in the middle of the creek and called 911 shortly after 5 p.m. after seeing a person in the water who was trying to get to shore with his canoe.

Pfeiffer got in his boat and went to the boat launch to get help. Robert Burau swam to shore of the island himself due to the life jacket he was wearing, authorities said.

After authorities reached Burau by boat and he and his canoe were returned to the boat launch, Burau was taken to Lakeshore Hospital in Irving.
