Lockport woman found unresponsive behind the wheel faces DWI charge

LOCKPORT – A Lockport woman found unresponsive behind the wheel of an SUV in a ditch early Tuesday faces a driving while intoxicated charge.

Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a one-car crash on the 4400 block of Lake Avenue just before 1:30 a.m.

They found a Chevrolet Trailblazer in the ditch on the side of the road. Deputies determined the vehicle was driving north when it left the east side of the road and traveled about 75 feet in the ditch before striking a driveway culvert.

Tammi A. Gilbert, 40, had to be extricated from the vehicle. She was taken to the Niagara County Fairgrounds from which she was taken by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center. Her condition was not known Tuesday morning.

In addition to the DWI charge, she also was ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt and for a lane violation.
