At Obies, Ciminelli keeps on winning

Top qualifier Ryan Ciminelli won both his matches to advance in the winners bracket of the 53rd Annual George A. Obenauer Masters Tournament.

The Cheektowaga native bowled a 660 (189-247-224) to defeat Mike Firzak (Amherst) and then rolled a 648 (242-232-174) to defeat Ray Richards (Alden) at AMF Airport Lanes Friday.

John Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda, who was second after qualifying, advanced after beating Andrew Herbert (Eden) 692-587 then defeating Curtis Foss (Medina), 701-595.

Also advancing out of the winners bracket were Justin Zimmerman (Cheektowaga) who defeated Derrick Greene (Buffalo), 553-551, and Mike Kemp (Cheektowaga), 617-587; and Joe Burgio (Tonawanda) who beat Tony Dolan (West Seneca), 655-583, and Mike Johnson (Grand Island), 634-620.

The elimination bracket kept eight bowlers alive for Saturday’s matchups – Matt Zasowski (Kenmore), Mike Johnson (Grand Island), Mike Zarcone (Tonawanda), Mike Kemp (Cheektowaga), Dave Zajac (Niagara Falls), Curtis Foss (Medina), Mike Bedford (Lockport) and Ray Richards (Alden).

Zarcone had the high score of the day with a 733 in an elimination win over Mike Firzak (Amherst).

The tournament continues Saturday beginning with elimination bracket matchups at 6:30 p.m. and the winners bracket matchups at 7:45.
