United Way’s ‘Community Baby Shower’ to help at-risk moms

Volunteers on Thursday packed donations from a “Community Baby Shower” to help struggling young families in Erie County.

The United Way of Buffalo & Erie County had been collecting baby items including diapers, thermometers and books since April 4. Volunteers were expected to pack about 1,000 “baby bundles” inside the United Way’s Delaware Avenue offices.

The packages of items will be given to families through the Catholic Charities of Buffalo WIC program, the Buffalo Prenatal Perinatal Network and the Jericho Road Community Health Center’s Priscilla Project.

Thousands of babies are born into poverty every year in Erie County and many face risks due to the lack of prenatal care, the United Way said.

It was the United Way’s fifth annual event.
