Guest conductor crafts an unusual program with Brahms and Gershwin

Brahms and Gershwin might sound like strange bedfellows, but the combination is certainly colorful. Guest conductor Carl St. Clair, in town to lead the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, has crafted a concert that begins with Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 and ends with a set of songs from Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess.” The Gershwin songs feature the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus and guest soloists Angela Brown and Kevin Deas – both of whom have sung before in Buffalo, to audience acclaim. The songs will include “Summertime,” “My Man’s Gone Now,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So” and the beautiful duet “Bess, You Is My Woman Now.”

The concert takes place at 10:30 a.m. Thursday and at 8 p.m. Friday at Kleinhans Music Hall. Tickets are $34.50 to $86.50. For info, call 885-5000 or visit bpo.org.
