Wiley exiting Ch. 7 in July, presumably headed for a larger market

I predicted that Channel 7 reporter Desiree Wiley would eventually go to a bigger market, but I didn’t think it would be this fast.

Channel 7 General Manager Mike Nurse confirmed this morning that Wiley is leaving at the end of her contract in July. He added he doesn’t know where she is going, but presumably it is for opportunities in larger markets.

Reached this morning, Wiley wrote that she can't confirm anything now because she is still under contract and has nothing to announce.

When speculation arose in mid-March that she might be leaving Channel 7 for a bigger market, Wiley said: “I love working in Buffalo and that remains my focus.”

She confirmed back then that she has an agent and also addressed her wedding plans.

She recently became engaged to David Fluellen Jr., who, like Wiley, is from Lockport and a bit of a celebrity. A star running back at the University of Toledo, Fluellen now is a member of the Tennessee Titans of the NFL. He reportedly was on the team's practice squad last season.

Wiley wrote on Twitter in March that she and Fluellen both went to Lockport High School, reconnected nearly three years ago and hope to get married in July of 2017.

A 2012 graduate of Buffalo State College, Wiley joined Channel 7 almost three years ago as a multimedia journalist and has had numerous roles at the station since then. She currently works on the morning newscast.

Her hiring only a year out of college had become a trend in local TV, after decades of requiring reporters to get seasoning in smaller markets out of town.

A frequent beauty contest winner since an early age, Wiley was named first runner-up in the Miss New York competition in 2014 and 2015.

Channel 7’s announcement of her hiring three years ago noted that she was a beauty contest winner, but it wasn’t emphasized. But this being TV, looks do count for something. It may even help you get to a bigger market faster than might have been expected.
