Rita M. Certo, wife of Niagara Falls Chief City Court judge

Oct. 31, 1930 – April 25, 2016

Rita M. Certo, wife of the late Niagara Falls Chief City Court Judge Anthony J. Certo, died Monday in Our Lady of Peace Nursing Home, Lewiston. She was 85.

The former Rita Cukierski, who was known to her friends as Sugar, was a Niagara Falls native. After she graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1948, she was crowned Miss Niagara in honor of the city’s centennial celebration, which led to her being featured in many local and national publications.

She was employed at several local businesses, including Kimberly Clark Corp., as well as the Cataract Restaurant and Bar Supply. In 1958, she married Mr. Certo, who was then a local lawyer. The couple remained married for 54 years. He died in 2012. Mrs. Certo was renowned by those who knew her for her cooking skills. She enjoyed flower arranging, was an avid golfer and member of the Echo Society.

She is survived by two daughters, Karen Anne and Elizabeth; a son, Anthony P., and three grandsons.

Funeral services were private.
