Run in your undies Saturday for a good cause

It’s not every day you get the chance to run around Buffalo in your underwear and something good happens.

Saturday will be one of those days. Hundreds will run city streets wearing boxers and briefs during the Undy Run/Walk, which starts in Delaware Park and will be hosted by the Colon Cancer Alliance.

The lighthearted, family-friendly event encourages participants to wear silly boxers, briefs or costumes in support of knocking colon cancer out of the top three cancer killers. Money raised will benefit the Independent Health Foundation, as well as alliance national prevention, research and patient support initiatives.

Typical gear for the 5K run and 1-mile fun walk generally includes themed underwear or boxers, frilly tutus, superhero capes, or head-to-toe costumes. Runners generally wear underwear over their running clothes.

Included with the race registration is a pair of signature Undy Run/Walk boxers, although participants are encouraged to get creative with their style choice and team spirit. The goal is to spark much needed conversations about the colon cancer.

Though one of the most preventable cancers, colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. In 2014, nearly 140,000 Americans were diagnosed with colon cancer, and more than 50,000 died from the disease. In New York alone, there have been 8,590 people diagnosed and 2,970 colon cancer deaths in the past year.

Almost 20 Undy events nationwide raise more than $2 million annually.

“Colon cancer is not always an easy topic to discuss, and the Undy Run/Walk gives us a lighthearted forum to bring awareness to a serious disease,” said Adina Frazier, alliance special events director. “The more we can raise awareness, encourage screening, and promote prevention, the closer we get to knocking colon cancer out the top three cancer killers.”

Register in advance for the walk or run at undyrunwalk.org; on-site registration begins at 7:30 a.m. next Saturday in advance of the 9 a.m. start.
