Religious group selling 35-acre site on Lake Ontario

A Christian outreach ministry is putting its 35-acre Niagara Shores Campground & Conference Center along Lake Ontario up for sale, after concluding it’s not worth the investment that would be required to upgrade it.

Global Outreach Mission Inc. is seeking a buyer for the sprawling year-round retreat facility at 6423 E. Lake Road in Newfane, with 1,626 feet of lakefront. It’s now on the market for $1.9 million.

The facility includes 15 recreational vehicle sites, tent sites, a lodge for 80 guests, two bunk houses for 50 guests, seven cabins for 84 guests, and cottages. There are also eight single-family year-round homes, a pool, a gym, sports fields, a basketball court, an archery and shooting range, a ropes course, paintball, a nine-hole mini-golf course, a beach area, a cafe and dining room, and a 20,000-square-foot conference center. The property itself, which is zoned as “community facility,” consists of four separate tax parcels that can be divided.

“It’s got a lot of interesting things in it,” said George Hamberger, the Realty USA broker handling the sale. “You’ve got access to the water, where a lot of places you can’t get to the water. And it’s just a couple of miles from Olcott Beach, so geographically, it’s a nice spot.”

He noted the potential for redevelopment of the property into residential patio homes, for example, and cited proximity to Niagara Falls, Buffalo and even Rochester. “So we’re pretty optimistic we’ll get a deal here.”

The complex, part of the Niagara Bible Conference, has been controlled by the ministry for the last several years, but dates back over 90 years. It’s always operated as a Christian-based youth summer adventure camp and recreation center, linked with the Christian Camp & Conference Association, but has also been leased out to other organizations and businesses for various conferences, meetings and retreats.
