Power Take: Kelly may have been contender in weak quarterback class

Chad Kelly made a prudent decision, returning to Ole Miss for his senior season.

But with the escalating first-round buzz around this year’s quarterback draft class, considered weak when the college season ended, the St. Joe’s grad might’ve heard his name announced Thursday night.

Cal quarterback Jared Goff and North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz almost certainly will be drafted Nos. 1 and 2 after Los Angeles and Philadelphia made boffo trades to jockey into place. Paxton Lynch of Memphis and Connor Cook of Michigan State appear in some first-round mocks.

Sports Illustrated’s Peter King reported rumblings Buffalo is interested in Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg with the 19th pick. Kelly could be better than them all.

The NFL’s underclassmen advisory committee told Kelly he didn’t have a first- or second-round grade. Then he was Sugar Bowl MVP.

As the draft nears, teams tend to overlook concerns and embrace what captures their imagination. Kelly would have done that.
