Fort Erie man killed in fiery crash that destroys garage

FORT ERIE, Ont. – A 46-year-old Fort Erie man was killed early Monday morning after a fiery crash into a garage on Ridge Road North, police said.

According to the Niagara Regional Police Service, the man was driving south on Ridge Road North toward Garrison Road at about 1:30 a.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road, driving onto the shoulder and then across both lanes of traffic. The vehicle struck a detached garage on the west side of Ridge Road North, causing a fire that spread between the vehicle and the garage.

Both the garage and the man’s 2003 Pontiac Sunfire were destroyed in the crash, police said, with damage estimated to be in excess of $60,000.

The man’s identity is not being released, police said. He was the sole occupant of the car.

The accident is under investigation by the Ontario Coroner’s Office, the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office and detectives from the police service’s Collision Reconstruction Unit.

Witnesses are asked to contact investigators at (905) 688-4111, Ext. 5500.
