Former South Buffalo bar owner accused of not paying state sales tax

The former owner of Coach’s Corner Bar is charged with two felonies in connection with allegations that he didn’t pay his state sales tax.

Nicholas Schaefer, 46, was arraigned Friday in State Supreme Court on charges of grand larceny in the third degree and criminal tax fraud in the third degree.

According to the District Attorney’s Office, while Schaefer was owner/operator of the bar at 615 Hopkins St. he kept more than $14,000 that he collected in sales tax, reportedly to try to keep the bar afloat. The South Buffalo bar closed in June 2015.

Schaefer now works as a parking enforcement officer for the City of Buffalo and was released on his own recognizance. The alleged thefts were discovered through an investigation by the state Department of Taxation and Finance. Assistant District Attorney Gary M. Ertel is prosecuting the case.
