Buffalo man sent to prison for trying to steal winter jackets

A Buffalo man who attempted to steal three winter jackets from a store inside the Buffalo Veterans Affairs Medical Center has been sentenced by U.S. Magistrate Judge Hugh B. Scott to five months in prison, followed by five months of confinement in a community treatment center, U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr. reports.

Norris L. King, 52, of Stevens Avenue, was convicted of theft and assault within special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States. Prosecutors said King tried to take three jackets, valued at $179 each, from the Veteran Canteen Services shop on Dec. 9, but was chased and detained by the store manager and another VA employee. While he was fleeing, prosecutors charged, he assaulted an elderly veteran seeking medical treatment.
