A Buffalo man has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty after authorities said he beat a 5-pound dog earlier this month.
Santiago Morales, who is not the owner of the dog, was charged with the felony after an investigation by the SPCA Serving Erie County, the agency said Wednesday.
The owners of the dog, a Chihuahua mix named Susie, brought the dog for veterinary care on April 11, one day after the dog sustained several injuries including multiple fractures to her pelvis, bruising around much of her body, swelling and bloody eyes.
The dog, about 20 months old, is currently in stable condition and will be under the care of the SPCA at an off-site location. She is being fed through a syringe and is being given pain medication, the agency said.
SPCA animal cruelty investigator and State Peace Officer Christina Vitello lodged the charges against Morales, who is due in Buffalo City Court on May 23.
