Letter: New Yorkers are being crushed by high taxes

New Yorkers are being crushed by high taxes

Well, we have done it again. A couple of days ago, The News reported that we are again No. 1 in per-capita tax burden in the nation. This would be a great accomplishment if there was some type of award for finishing first. Unfortunately, the reward is ever higher taxes, and both citizens and businesses moving out of the state for more reasonable tax rates and jobs.

Most of us hate to pay taxes, although we usually can deal with it if we feel that our tax dollars are being spent wisely. But I think most of us don’t feel that they are. Only recently our county executive issued a laundry list of how to spend a projected $12 million to $15 million surplus. Politicians just can’t wait to spend our money. New York State has dozens of authorities, many of which are carrying tens of millions of dollars of debt. Most of the time we don’t even know what their mission is. And let’s not forget the recently disclosed slush fund that the governor controls.

I could go on and on but for those out there who are paying attention to what our various governmental entities are up to, I think I’ve made my point. I just wish that I had some solutions.
